Services Examination requires every candidate to choose at
least two optional subjects, one for the Preliminary test
and another two for the Main Examination. It is here the
candidate faces problems, as he does not know the nature

Tamil Literature |
|
முதன்மைத்
தேர்வில் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் உண்டு. வினாவிற்கு
விடையை விளக்கமாக எழுதிச் செல்லும் முறையில்
இத்தேர்வு நடைப்பெறும். இதில் தாள் 1 தாள் 2
என இரு தேர்வுகள் நடைப்பெறும்.
தாள் 1 :
இதில் இந்திய மொழிக் குடும்பங்கள். திராவிட
மொழிகள், தமிழ் மொழி அமைப்பு, இலக்கணக்
கூறுகள், இலக்கிய வரலாறு , திறனாய்வு ,
மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, பண்பாட்டு வரலாறு ஆகியன
பாடங்கள். இவை மாணவர்கள் ஆய்வு நோக்கு,
ஒப்பீடு, பகுத்தாய்வு, வரலாற்று நோக்கு
போன்றவற்றின் அடிப்படையில் தக்கவையாக
இருக்கும்.
தாள் 2 :
செய்யுள் இலக்கியம் உடைநடை, இலக்கியங்கள்
இதில் அடங்கும். செய்யுள் இலக்கியத்தில்
குறுந்தொகை, திருக்குறள், சிலப்பதிகாரம்
போன்றவற்றில் குறிப்பிட்ட பகுதிகள் மட்டுமே
பாடத்தில் உண்டு. உரைநடை இலக்கியத்தில்
பதினம், சித்திரப்பாவை குருபீடம் போன்ற
குறிப்பிட்ட நூல்கள் மட்டும் உண்டு. இவை
மாணவர்களின் நினைவாற்றல், கற்பனைத்திறன்,
சிந்திக்கும் ஆற்றல் சிக்கல்களை
எதிர்கொள்ளவும் மனத்திண்மை ஆகியவற்றைச்
சோதிப்பதாக அமையும். |

Paper-I of Geography deals with the physical
and the human aspects of the world in general.
The physical aspect deals with the origin,
evolution and the changes that are occurring
in the Solid Earth's Crust, Atmosphere and the
Oceans.
It
also includes that part dealing with the
interaction of all the earth's crust,
atmosphere and the oceans. Human aspects deal
with the human adjustment to the influence of
the physical aspects, which determine their
ethnic characteristics. A detailed study of
all is needed.

Paper-II deals with the study of Indian
Geography its physical, economic, political
and human aspects. The focus is on the study
of the economic use of the available
resources, which calls for specific planning
in accordance with the needs of different
geo-climatic zones.
The candidates is expected to be knowledgeable
in the nature and impact of the contemporary
events such as earthquakes, volcanoes etc. and
also needs to understand safety measures and
calamity management measures. |

Public Administration is one of the most
popularly chosen optional subjects in the
Civil Services Examination. It deals with the
study of the manner in which the
administration of a country is run. |

Paper-I of Public administration deals
with Management Principles and
Administrative Behaviour. It also deals
with the principles of Financial
Administration, Personnel Administration,
Welfare and Development administrations. |
|
Paper-II deals with the application of
such principles in the Indian
Administration. In Paper II, he is
required to understand how these
principles are applied in the Indian
context. For example, in Paper I a
candidate learns the Principles of
Recruitment, Concept, types, methods and
importance of Training as part of the
Personnel Administration. |

In Paper II, it is also required of a
candidate to understand the basic
principles of the Constitution of India,
the objectives of the Constitution and the
structure of the Indian Administration
that the Constitution has created to
provide Good governance to the citizens of
India. Sometimes the questions are also
asked from the day-today happenings, which
have a bearing on the administration, and
are required of any person with an
inquisitive mind and a regular observer of
the newspapers. |

History, as an optional subject comprises
two parts viz. Indian History and World
History. For the Preliminary Examination
UPSC prescribes Indian History as the
optional subject and for the Mains it is
coupled with the World History. History as
optional subject, is not concerned with
the diary of events and pains of
memorizing the dates, as is generally
perceived to be.
Instead, in History, emphasis will be on
broad general understanding of the subject
in its social, economic and political
aspects. It requires the candidates to
understand evolution of past trends and
themes, which made their impact on Indian
society during the ancient, medieval and
modern times.
History of Modern India covers history of
the Country from about the middle of 19 th
century and would also include knowledge
about the important personalities who
shaped the Freedom Movement and Social
reforms. It is also expected of the
candidates to understand the process and
state of modern concepts like nationalism,
democracy and socialism in the midst of
their anti-colonial historical experience.
World History is included for the Mains
examination. World History is the study of
nation states. It includes study of
various stages of historical evolution
from the phase marking the decline of
medieval empires to the rise of
globalization of present era. |

It Deals with the society in general and
about social institutions in particular.
Paper - I Deals with the theories and
concepts in sociology and also the
thoughts of eminent sociologists like Karl
Marx, Emile Durkheim. Max Weber, Talcott
Parsons, etc., which made greater impact
on the social, political and economic
systems of the society, conceptually it
deals with the evolution and
transformation of social institutions such
as family, marriage, kinship, caste
systems, religion, economic institutions
etc.
In Paper - II, the candidates study about
the Indian Society i.e. the social
institutions in INDIA ( family, marriage,
kinship, caste system, religions, etc., )
and also about the current social problems
in INDIA. |

Psychology |
|
Psychology is the study of human behaviour
Paper - I deals with various principles
(aspects) of human behaviour & mind such
as learning, memory, attention and
perception, emotions, motivation,
intelligence, personality etc., and the
theories associated with the principles.
Paper - II deals with the application of
the principles of psychology in various
filed (viz) Educational Psychology,
Community Psychology, Defence Psychology,
Environmental Psychology, Psychology in
mass media and IT etc., |
